Crowded House to
reform?
Well, not exactly but it's the next
best thing since they split up in 1996.
24 yr old Dale Minaker (lead vocalist & rhythm
guitarist) decided that as soon as Christmas 1998 was
over he was going to form a tribute band to the wonderful
New Zealand/Australian pop act that was Crowded House.
Dale, of course taking the lead role as the groups
prolific songwriter & front man of the band, Neil
Finn.
First on board without any hesitation was the local T.V.
celebrity Gut Richardson (26yrs old), who takes on the
role as Tim Finn (Neil Finn's older brother). Guy having
a good vocal range fits in perfectly as the bands 2nd
vocalist/backing singer & percussionist to boot. (oh,
by the way, conveniently he also plays harmonica!)
Next to recruit was the ever enthusiastic Jimmy Knowles
(drums & backing vocals). With this, just turned
21yrs old takes on the bizarre personality as the
Crowdie's drummer & clown - Paul Hester.
Jimmy was picked due to the fact that he was a long time
friend of Dale's & one of the hottest drummers around
(if you pardon the rock cliché).
The lads needed a Bass player who could also sing backing
vocals & luckily who should have just moved to town
from the south but 35yr old rock walrus
"Dangerous" Dave Wiggins. Dave takes on the job
as the band's bass player & album sleeve artist Nick
Seymore. Dave has the unique skill of being able to learn
any song in 5 minutes flat, guess it must be the extra
years he has on the other guys!
Warm & fairly content, but still not satisfied, Dale
took it upon himself to find the missing ingredient, a
lead guitarist who was versatile enough to take on the
demanding role of the bands mulit talented musician, Mark
Hart. Who should offer to join but his best friend Tom
Gale (22yrs old), who fitted in perfectly with his guitar
style.
In the space of 5 weeks the foundation of a soon to be
tribute was built, but they needed a name
luckily
Dale remembered one he came up with six months before the
band existed
Crooked House.
So there it is, what was just drunken meanderings between
Dale & Guy at closing hours at The Boars Head on a
bleary eyed Saturday night was now a full bodied, fully
functional, screaming, crying, breathing, emotional
roller coaster of a soundscape that is Crowded House. All
the hits are there: Weather with you, It's only natural,
Distant sun, 4 seasons in 1 day, Instinct, Don't dream
its over, Locked out, & not forgetting the odd gem
that the Finn brothers wrote back in Split Enz & the
odd surprise lying here & there including some of the
more recent solo work of Neil & Tim Finn.
Don't be foolish, come & see them because remember,
You know more Crowded House
songs than you think!
